I've got a secret...
If you are a fan of Big Bang Theory, I'm sure you have already noticed the awesome Rubik's Cube tissue box that Sheldon and Leonard have in their apartment. Well, I decided that we had to have one for our new 80's Geek Living Room!
As with the Super Mario Coasters, making a pattern would be more difficult and time consuming for me than the project itself. It's pretty simple though so a detailed pattern shouldn't be necessary. Start by cutting five pieces of plastic canvas to 37 line squares. Assuming that all plastic canvas is the same size, your pieces will be just under 5 1/2". On the fifth piece, cut a hole in the middle that is 13 lines in from every side.
Here is the basic pattern for each color block:
This is the order that I used for my colors:
Each block takes about a 5' piece of yarn. You can put the colors into whatever order you want but I recommend going off of an actual Rubick's Cube. I just made up colors for one and it wasn't until I had already put it together that I realized some of the blocks weren't technically possible. So I had to rip it all out and start over again because I knew that it would bug me every time I looked at it.
Once you have finished your color blocks, fill in the inside black lines on each panel. Then stitch all of the panels together and all along the bottom edge. I went over all of the sides twice just to make sure that none of the plastic showed through.
Now just slip it over a square tissue box.

Yeah, I wish I had thought of it before I completed my first one. :( You could definitely make a completed cube! I'm just a nerd and had to have one just like on the Big Bang Theory. At least I refrained from scouring clips of the show to make sure I had the color blocks in the same order as theirs and settled for just making an uncompleted cube. ;)
Hmmm...I'm not sure yet. We do have some Carebears that might make their way in there. :)

Quick question, is the one in the pictures off of a cube or is that the one where you winged it? I got the idea to make one of these for my husband as a gift for today (2/14) and after some searching, purchasing, and running out of time, it's going to be for his birthday in April.

Okay so I'm gonna try this. Got the stuff I need but could use some pointers as I've done crochet for a while but haven't done needlework. Are the stiches in the colored blocks a single long diagonal stitch or is there more to it? Thanks.

I love this s. Going to make it for my best friend. Can you please tell me if your pattern is 37 x 37 because that seems a bit large for the standard tissue box. Thanks. Any help is appreciated.
Yes, it is 37 squares by 37 squares. This is the size that it needs to be in order to end up the right height for a standard tissue box. It is about half an inch wider than the tissue box. If you want it to fit more snugly, you could alter the pattern but you will end up with rectangle color blocks instead of square like a Rubik's Cube. Hope that helps!
never done anything like this before and tried last night. maybe i'm missing something but i always end up with a row leftover. each block appears to be 12 by 12? sorry i'm not getting it. :/
