Turn Your Favorite T-Shirt Into A Pillowcase

My husband, Shelby, recently cleaned out his closet and got rid of a bunch of clothes that were a bit too snug or that hardly ever get worn. One of those was his Shelby Cobra t-shirt. He wasn't quite ready to toss it though so he asked me to turn it into a pillowcase for him. Follow this tutorial to make a pillowcase with your own sentimental t-shirt that no longer gets worn.

Cut along the sides of the t-shirt and around the seams.

Use a quilting ruler and rotary cutter on a healing cutting mat to cut around the logo on the front making sure that there is enough extra around the sides for your seam. If you already have a pillow made for it, make sure this piece is large enough to cover it.

Cut two pieces from the back side of the shirt. They should be the width of the front piece. For the height, divide the height of the front piece in half and add at least two inches.

For example, the front piece on this one was 15" wide x 14" tall. So the two back pieces had to be 15" wide x 9" tall.

Sew a seam on the top side of both back pieces. When working with a stretchy material like a t-shirt, try not to pull on it while cutting or sewing it. If it is stretched out while you are sewing, your seam will end up really wavy.

Place the front side of your shirt up and facing you. Place one of the back pieces on top of it with the raw side facing you and the seam in the middle. Line up the edges with the front piece.

Take the other back piece and place it with the raw side facing up and the seam at the middle, overlapping the other back piece. Pin all of the pieces together and sew all along the edge.

Turn your new pillowcase right side out and slip your pillow into the flap on the back side of the pillowcase. Now you can display your old favorite shirt instead of keeping it hidden in the back of your closet!
