Hug Your Loved Ones!

I cannot express how important it is to tell people how much you love them, hug them every day and spend as much quality time together as possible.  The people we care about are the most important things in this world.  In the end nothing else matters.  It doesn't matter if the dishes are done or if you were able to buy the newest coolest electronic, or whatever else it is that seems important in the moment.  All that really matters is having people in your life that you love and who love you back and making sure that they know how much you care.  We were reminded of this yesterday afternoon when a bullet passed through our front door:

Barely five minutes after walking home from school with my son, I heard three loud popping noises.  There are fireworks set off in our neighborhood all the time so I just assumed it was that and didn't really think any more about it.

Then when I came into the living room a few minutes later I noticed this picture laying on the floor with a hole in it.

I looked up at the spot above the tv where it usually sits and realized there was a hole there too.

This ended up being where they dug the bullet out of our house.  Our son was on the other side of this wall using the bathroom.  If it had gone through the wall just a couple of feet over instead of the door....things could have been really bad.  Or if it had happened a few minutes earlier as we were walking home.  Or if we had been in the living room doing homework.  There are so many ways that this could have all been much, much worse.

As it was, everyone made it through physically unharmed.  We just have some holes in our doors and the wall.  As well as wood splinters all over our living room from the where the bullet busted through the door.

We don't have any known enemies so the police believe it was just a random drive-by.  Apparently these have been happening often lately in the Twin Cities area.  I didn't think to ask but they didn't mention there being any casualties.  Their best guess it that it is a bunch of stupid teenagers who think it is cool to fire into people's houses.

Who knows, maybe they just didn't like our 'No Solicitors' sign.

My husband was on the way home from a business trip so he didn't arrive until a few hours later.  It was difficult having to deal with the police alone and put on a happy face for our boy but it was probably a good thing that he had that time to cool down.  Thankfully one of our friends came over to stay with us until Shelby got home.  I am so grateful to have a friend like him who we know we can count on any time no matter what the circumstances may be.

Our families really want us to move back home right away.  Honestly the thought crossed my mind.  Unfortunately while we were already planning to move back...that just isn't a possibility right now.  Our plan was to put the house on the market in the Spring of 2013.  The very earliest we can list it without having to pay back the first time homebuyers tax credit is August of this year.  We do not have the money to pay it back and with the housing market the way it is we will probably barely even be able to sell it for enough to pay off the mortgage much less another $8K to pay back the tax credit.

The only way to move right now would be to just walk away and face foreclosure.  We aren't really considering that option right now which means we are stuck here for at least 7 more months.  Since it was (in theory) completely random the police don't believe we are in any danger of having another situation like this.  So we will just try to put the pieces back together and move on.  If there does happen to be another shooting in our neighborhood though - we are gone.  I don't care if that means filing bankruptcy or facing other long-lasting repercussions.  I will not stay here if we discover that this was just the beginning instead of some crazy fluke.

Soooo....yeah....I still can barely wrap my head around this and put a cohesive thought together.  I'm a bit numb right now.  I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that I just had to shut my emotions off in order to stay calm for my boy.  He seems completely un-traumatized by the entire experience.  He told me that someone must have accidentally fired their gun and it just accidentally came into our house.  According to him it's all just a big accident.  Coincidentally on the way to school that morning he told me that he wants to be a police officer when he grows up.  So he was thrilled to get to talk with several police officers and receive sticker badges from them.

As unhappy as I am with the whole situation and somewhat anxious about being in my own home now...I am so very thankful that everyone is safe.  Which is why I am begging you to tell people that you love them and hug them every day because you never know what tomorrow may bring....

OMG Megan, what a terrible thing, I could barely believe what I was reading! I have no idea what I would do in your place, it seems like one of those life situations where each answer comes with a costly sacrifice.
I hope you find the answers you need so that peace and stability can return to your home and family. Thinking of you♥

obviously I am so sorry this happened to you and congratulate you for being so strong and having the presence to post about it. I am sure it was a random thing- you and your family don't strike me as people who have enemies who hate them enough to actually shoot them- especially randomly shoot into the house rather than actually aiming at one individual. A friend had an arrow shot through her house a few years ago- just like your story- and nothing ever happened again. Why your house? I'm sure you ware right that some idiot thinks it is fun to randomly shoot into houses. Life is full of near miss experiences- it really is. All we can do is as you have said- be GRATEFUL for our loved ones. Be MINDFUL of how much we love them, TELL them we love them, and in ways that SHOW we love them.

It only takes a second for a life to change completely whether from a car accident, a baby that chokes, a child that runs in front of a car, a house fire… I could go on. I'm a pediatric nurse and I have seen preschoolers hit by the school bus right in front of mom, a child that almost drowned (he needed CPR) after loosing one of his swimmies in a pool with mom standing right next to him in the water, a child fall out of bed onto concrete floor with mom and grandma standing literally at the bedside- he slipped between them. I could go on and on but my point is we all are seconds from a tragedy and we need to live our lives mindfully. I am glad you were reminded in a way that didn't end in tragedy.

OMG I am so sorry. Guns are so dangerous. When I was 8 on New years eve the same exact thing happened. I was at my baby sitters house sitting on the potty and a bullet came through the window. It was a random shot fired in the air to celebrate the police said. I still to this day am terrified if I hear shooting and I live in the boonies so there are tons of hunters.

I am so happy nothing happened, to you all.

Oh Megan, this brought tears to my eyes just thinking about what might have happened. I am thankful that your family is safe. I just can't believe the foolish decisions that people make in life. How can you fire a gun without thinking of the consequences? And sadly you now have to deal with the feeling of losing your sense of safety and security. But you have shared a good reminder for all of us - thank you!

So scary! I'm glad to hear everyone is okay, but I'm sure you're probably still shaking! Hope the police are right and this was just someone's random stupidity.

how terrible and frightening for you!I am so glad no one was physically hurt! i am so sorry you were so emotionally hurt. Our homes are supposed to be safe havens..and this awful person(s) tried to take this from you. I hope it is a random incident,it certainly sounds as if it it.
sending prayers that God continues to keep you safe...someone certainly was watching over you!!!

I am so happy you are ok. I work for the Dept of Corrections and one of our female officers was murdered today at a unit. I am in shock still. So this is what I have been thinking all day about living for the moment because tomorrow is not promised.

there are so many people doing such horrible things to people, with absolutely no regard for them. It makes me sick and makes me desperate to stop it.

Oh my goodness. I don't know what to say. This is really shocking and appealing and I'm just horrified for you. I hope this is just a bizarre one-off incident and nothing else happens but I can understand the awful feelings of insecurity and uncertainty that you must have. I'm shocked, but I understand this isn't much help to you. Is there anything I can do, what we all can do?

Omg! Very glad to hear you and your family are alright. And I agree, it's important to make sure those you love know that you love them because you just never know.

I'm so very sorry. I can't even imagine how you must be feeling, to not feel safe in your own home. Hopefully the police will make an arrest soon so that you'll be able to see that it was entirely random.

Prayers for peace & answers coming your way.

Oh, how awful - I live very close to a neighborhood where something similar happened - so scary to not feel safe in your own home.

I just stumbled on your blog today after following a Pinterest post on one of your chicken recipes, wandered thru some other recipes and then came to your home page to subscribe and then read about your day yesterday...

I am so sorry this happened to you and I hope that you will be able to feel secure in your home again. As other commentors have stated, there are many things that can change our lives in a split second, and it is wise for all of us to live in the present and let those close to us know how precious they are to us.

I am praying for your family...for peace a protection. I cannot imagine the fear you must feel, but know someone in Texas has just prayed for security, peace, and protection for your family. I have never been in this situation but I am reminded of a few encouraging scriptures...
In peace I will both lie down and sleep, for You, Lord, alone make me dwell in safety and confident trust. Psalm 4: 8

You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your ride hand, but it will not come near you. Psalm 91:5-7

I had a scary experience a few years ago. We were living on a dead end road in the country and came home and realized we had been burglarized. They took a fan (it was summer) and some other minor items. We felt so violated.....it was even worse because my husband worked nights. I was alone with 2 toddlers and the house we lived in was not real safe. I know it doesn't compare to your experience, but I understand how violated and afraid you must be. Hang in there!!!

How terrifying! Glad to know that you and your family are okay. I have been shot at before (in a car, though) and it takes a while to feel comfortable again. Hang in there. You must have been amazing for your son to be non-reactive about this. Amazing.

Megan, if we here in blogland can comfort you in any way, consider it done! This kind of thing shouldn't happen to ANYONE. How terribly scary for you, and what a wonderful mom you are to be strong so your precious son isn't too traumatized. Peace and light to you. (ps - I don't know why my comment is coming up with a black triangle containing an exclamation point...)

Oh my lord. I'm so happy that everyone is safe. I can't believe that someone would do such a thing and randomly. That's scary as hell man.

WOW, megan, that is so so scary. I can't believe that happened! I'm so glad you guys are ok. I would be feeling the same way, if something like that threatened my family it would be really hard to stay there. I will be praying for you all and thinking of you! It sounds like you are handling it well, taking it very seriously and talking to the police. I hope these stupid teenagers or whoever they are realize what they are doing and stop before they really hurt someone!

I am so sorry, that is frightening, and such an obvious 'close call'. I often wonder how many 'close calls' we have that we don't even realize.

I don't know if this would work with your tax credit thing, but have you considered renting your house out? We own a couple of homes that due to the lousy real estate market, are not selling so instead we are renting them out. If you filter the potential renter as best as you can, there are a lot of good renters out there. It's a pretty solid rental market right now, so it may be something you could consider.

Bless you with this tough decision. Little Bit from DecorateWithaLittleBit.com

I my, Megan, how incredibly scary. I cannot imagine how you must have felt and continue to feel. And to feel stuck in your home just adds salt to the wound, I am sure. I'm so sorry! I am thankful you are all unharmed but send peaceful thought your way. {hugs}

I just popped over here from your post about your new rental property, thank goodness you managed to make the move! I can't imagine what it must be like to have such a terrifying thing happen. My neighbourhood is not the best either but thankfully nothing so scary has happened to us.

Good luck on your new adventure and here's to safe, happy and stress-free endeavors!

Having an incident like what you experienced definitely changes how you will live from that day forward. We didn't have a drive-by, but we did have a car drive through our fence in the middle of the night, mow down trees, destroy a swing, hit some concrete blocks, went airborne, rode up a 20' flagpole, then landed on our back deck 2" from the house...and 1" from the gas line (we could have all been toast if he hit the gas line). I wanted to move so badly after that, but it wasn't something we could have done at the time. What I do know, I will never live backed up to a street, never have a home situated where a car can come off the road and end up in our front yard...yes, I'm paranoid...but, that fool took all my feeling of security away from me that night. So I do understand why you want to move.

One more thing...I thank GOD you and your son weren't hurt. The same year we had that car in our yard, was the same year some b*stard shot and killed our 20-year old daughter in a random act of violence...and he still walks our streets. You will never recover from that.

I found my way to this original story from today's post (3/2) about you moving. I really wanted to let you know that you created a beautiful home where the shooting happened...and you WILL create another beautiful home in your next location. The best to you and your family!

Sorry this turned into a mini-novel!
