Dexter Party Part One: Blood Splatter Cupcakes

I'm sure all of the Dexter fans out there are excited about the Season 7 premiere coming up in less than two weeks! Unfortunately we don't get Showtime so we only get to watch it if we buy in on dvd or wait for it to come on instant Netflix. As a result we haven't even seen seasons 5 and 6 yet. :( We love what we have seen so far though!

Awhile back a friend of ours said that we should throw a Dexter party since she is a huge fan too. The timing was never right though and we didn't have the opportunity or money to have one before we moved. However I decided to make one of our rooms Dexter themed for our upcoming Halloween Bash and this week I put together a little "party" in there. Hopefully this will be a good jumping off point for her and any other fans to get ideas for their own party.

For those who have never heard of Dexter here is a little synopsis - it is a tv show about a serial killer named Dexter Morgan. He doesn't kill just anybody though, he only kills other serial killers who have managed to escape punishment. He tracks them down, finds evidence to confirm their crimes and makes them look at photos of their victims before he kills them. During the day he works for the police department as a blood splatter analyst.

Now that we are all caught up, here is part one of my three part Dexter Party Series. First up are some blood splatter cupcakes:

Supplies:
Red Velvet Cupcake Mix
Red Cupcake Liners
White Frosting
Red Gel Frosting
Warm Water
NEW toothbrush or small paint brush

1. Bake your cupcakes according to package directions in red cupcake liners. I used foil and I really think that red would have looked better. Once they are cool, top with white frosting.

2. In a small container, squirt some of the red gel frosting. Mix in some of the red icing color. Continue adding either more of the gel or the color until you get it the darkness that you like. You will want your mixture to be the consistency of ketchup. If it is too thick, mix in just a few drops of warm water at a time until you reach the right thickness. You don't need to make too much of this mixture because a little goes a long way.

3. Place your cupcakes in a pan or onto waxed paper to protect your working surface. Dip your brush in the red icing mixture making sure that it is really saturated. The more "blood" that is on your brush, the bigger the splatters will be. Use your finger to quickly pull the bristles back so that you get a nice spray on the cupcakes. Continue until you are satisfied with the coverage on your cupcakes.

4. Now try to find someone daring enough to eat them. Creepy looking Halloween food doesn't bother me at all but it is surprising how many people won't try something even after you tell them that it is a normal food that is just made to look weird.

OMG I love it! The blood looks great and the color from the cupcakes with the motif is fantastic. We just got Season 6 from Blockbuster and are getting all caught up. Your timing is seriously serendipitous.

Wow, crazy timing we just started watching Dexter on Netflix! I'm slowly compiling "bloody" awful desserts for my vampire treat table and these will be perfect, can't wait to get out the toothbrush!!

Seriously wonderful. I'm going to FB this for my best triend in the UK who is a Dexter fan. I love the idea of the Dexter room for Halloween. Lots of plastic sheets and a coping saw? String patterns for blood splatters? I'm sure it's going to be wonderful!

I think I am going to have to upgrade to the DVD Netflix for awhile so I can get caught up too! I have heard about some of the things that have happened and I can't wait to watch it. You're vampire treat table sounds awesome. I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

I've never watched Dexter although I've been told I should start. Perhaps I'll get to that this winter. Regardless, these cupcakes are fantastic! Love the "splatter" against the white frosting! Great for Halloween!

These are brilliant! Now all you need is a tray with some plastic body parts to serve along side the cupcakes. Yum!

Thanks! You should definitely watch it. It's a bit odd when you realize that you are cheering for a serial killer but once you get past that it is a great show. Lol!

Hi!! Love these. I did the blood splatter as per your insteucrions but was there somewhere that said I should have done it the same day? I did the splatter last night and its since seeped into the icing and just looks like messy pink smudges. Did I accidentially make it too thin?
