Chunky Primitive Votive Candles

These chunky votives are a great addition to any primitive or rustic decor. You can even make them in any color or scent that you want.

SUPPLIES:
scented candle
unscented votive candles
double boiler
gloves
disposible pie tin
foil
clothespin

Use a double boiler to melt the scented candle. Pour the melted wax in a thin layer in the pie tin:

Put your gloves on to cut down on the mess. Let the wax dry a little bit then pick up the half-hardened wax and pack onto the unscented votives. Keep adding wax until it is completely covered.

Clip the clothespin onto the wick of one of the votives and dip in the melted wax remaining in the double boiler. This seals the chunks in place. Set the finished candle on a piece of foil until it is completely hardened. If you plan on giving these as gifts, place a votive in a treat bag, tie with some bakers twine, and add a tag with the scent typed onto kraft paper.

For the hazelnut and mulled cider candles, I used those scented jar candles with lids that they have at Walmart (the votives were the 16 pack of unscented) and just scooped out the wax. These candles worked really well for this project. In the first picture the hazelnut doesn't look as chunky but that was because I was just getting started and hadn't practiced yet. The sugared pecans candle was one of the jar candles without a lid and it didn't work quite as well. The wax was too creamy and it was difficult to get it to make chunks.

These look good enough to eat, like little cakes coated in brown sugar icing.
