"On The Air" Radio Light

I created this light as a prop for our church's Christmas dinner theater but we loved it so much that once the show was over we decided to keep it on top of the bookcases in our living room! My woodworking skills aren't the greatest so it's not the most professional looking but I like how it turned out.

1. Start by cutting a thin 2' x 2' piece of plywood into the following sizes: two sides - 4 1/4" x 7", top - 4 1/4" x 24", back - 7 1/4" x 24", front - 7 1/4" x 24" with the middle cut out 1 1/4" from each side.

2. Stain with color of choice (I used Early American).

3. Cut out a piece of clear plastic (I used an old poster frame) to 6 1/2" x 23".

4. Spray one side with a few coats of frosted glass spray paint.

5. Cut lettering out of red cardstock and glue to unpainted side of plastic using a glue stick. I cut out the lettering with my silhouette but you could use a stencil or print outline letters onto the cardstock and cut out.

6. Pre-drill small holes into the plastic and use small wood screws to attach to the back of the front wood piece. I used hot glue to hold the plastic in place while I attached the screws to give it a more permanent hold.

7. Drill a large hole onto the bottom side of your back piece for the power cord to come out.

8. Pre-drill some small holes near the edges where your box will be held together. Nail together with small nails.

9. Buy an 18" plug-in under the cabinet light. Turn it on and place your finished box over the top of it and run the power cord through the hole in the back.

SHOPPING LIST:
2'x2' Thin Plywood - $5
Early American Wood Stain - on hand
Clear plastic - on hand
Frosted Glass Spray Paint - on hand
Red Card Stock - on hand
18" Plug-In Under The Cabinet Light - $10
TOTAL = $15

As you can see, I already had some of the supplies on hand so this project on cost me $15 but even if you had to go out and buy everything, it would still probably only be about $25.
