Cinnamon spice ornaments are a classic. They make your home smell amazing work with any decorating style. They look particularly great with a rustic or primitive tree.
Since they are made with edible ingredients they are safe for little ones to work with. My guys (both the little one and my husband) proved this when they decided to try a bite of the dough because it smelled so good. Haha! Apparently it doesn't taste terrible.
Just mix together 1 cup unsweetened applesauce, 1 1/2 cup ground cinnamon, and 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves. Add more applesauce or cinnamon until the mixture is fairly dry but still holds together. You may need to use your hands toward the end. Roll it out to 1/4 inch thick like you would sugar cookies but use cinnamon to dust the rolling surface instead of flour.
Use a small cookie cutter to cut into shapes. Since normal people won't be eating these, you can continue rolling and cutting as many times as you need to until all of the dough is used up. I used a 2 inch star cutter and was able to make 50 ornaments.
Use a wooden skewer or small dowel rod to make a hole to add a hanger later. You can skip this step if you just want to use them as bowl fillers.
Bake at 200F for about an hour or two until they are dried out. Leave overnight or until they are rock hard. String some baker's twine or hemp through the hole and hang on the tree or around the house! If the hole doesn't go through all the way, carefully poke an awl through the hole then add your string.
