My porcelain sink has acquired some really nasty stains, a problem I'm sure many of you have faced. I tried scrubbing at the stains and used all kinds of cleansers (some I'm sure you should never use on a porcelain sink) but nothing worked. So I looked online and everything required filling up the sink and letting it soak for a couple of hours. Well, not only is it a pain to find a time when you for sure won't need your sink for that long, but I also didn't have a plug that would work for the garbage disposal side. So I put it off.
I'm sure you are all asleep now after reading about my dilemma but here comes the exciting part: I read about this bleach and baking soda scrub on Homemade Mamas and it didn't require any soaking! I was sold! I immediately mixed up their two parts baking soda to one part bleach concoction and applied the paste to my sink. It INSTANTLY started removing the stains on its own. I spent literally two minutes scrubbing it into some of the more stubborn stains, rinsed it away, and it looks like new!!!

Ahhh...Cleaning bliss! I'm sure some of you have been using this for years but it was new to me and I wanted to spread the good news!

I have never heard of this! Thanks for the tip. I used it last night on my white baking dishes that had stains -- now they look sparkling white!

Thanks for a GREAT idea. My solution has long been to lay out paper towels in the sink and soak them with bleach. They usually take care of the stains in an hour or so. THIS is a quicker solution AND it doesn't use paper towels.
I've tried to be greener and I no longer use paper towels for much of anything except bleaching the sink. With this tip, a roll of them will last me a year instead of the 6 months I'm currently getting out of them! ;0

Holy Smokes! I found this article weeks ago but I just tried this trick today and I was actually jumping around my kitchen in excitement! My sink was nasty gross disgusting gray-brown when I moved into my house and it's been creeping me out. Now it is sparkling white and it only took me about 5 minutes. This is without a doubt the most useful article on cleaning I've come across.
When we starting getting stains in our sink I was really worried that we had ruined it for good but that paste really did wonders. I'm so happy that it worked for you too!
I tried everything too. Earlier tonight I used my Mr. Clean sponge sample i got in the mail. Walah....almost all the stain came up with just a little scrubbing.

I was skeptical this solution would remove the stain in my bathroom sink, but desperate.

Bleach is magic. I just poured bleach on dry sink and without rubbing the stains were coming off. I trird before I found this article. I didn't baking soda. just bleach
It worked!!! My beige porcelain kitchen sink was an embarrassment and I had tried everything I could think of but nothing worked until I found this blog! My sink now sparkles!
I started to work on the stains in my bathtub. One time I could see a difference but I need one more application and I think it will look as groovy as my kitchen sink.
I rent so you can imagine what the kitchen sink and tub looked like.

Hi jayni, I personally feel the bleach with paper towels is better for hygienic reasons. What people don't understand is bleach does not kill the bacteria straight away it takes time minimum time is ten mins for me when I bleach or sterilize it should be left on for that time Do it as a routine chopping boards kitchen handles bin microwave fridge and teaspoons the go to the bathroom and bleach toilet and bath taps by time time you have done that you can go over with clean hot soapy water and rest assure it has kills all the nasty bugs we pick up on our daily routine. Once a week will stop any harmful bacteria building up to harmful levels. Money is the main culprit for spreading germs so if you think I've been in all day so no need to clean, think again things we touch but don't realize are dirty really are. So jayni as a stain remover it's fine but stick with the paper towels and thin bleach it's better for your health, if you ever has shigella you'd agree. Oh it came out of me at both ends nearly turned myself inside out. Not to mention almost cracked the toilet and my bottom vaguely resembled a blood orange. Moral of my story is hygiene is first everything else is secondary.
