My guys recently decided that they needed a pirate flag for their Man Cave. I have no idea why. Boys.
Luckily I already had everything I needed in my stash. Since we are focusing getting out of debt and saving up for our next house, I have been trying to do as many projects as possible with the supplies I have on hand.
First, cut a 15"x24" piece of black fabric. Fold over a 1/2" hem all around and sew. Take one of the short sides, fold over 1" and sew with a 1/4"hem. This will be the pocket for your dowel rod.
I searched for images of pirate flags for inspiration and came up with this. To print out this stencil, just right click on the picture and save. Then print whatever size you need. For this flag, I printed it at a full page size.
To apply the skull and crossbones to my flag I used the freezer paper method. You can find my tutorial here.
Once the paint was dry, I peeled the freezer paper away and my pirate flag was ready to go! I just slid a 3/8" dowel rod through the pocket and hung it in the Man Cave.
It probably would have turned out better if I had used a heavy black canvas instead of this thin black fabric but it'll do.

I love this stencil for boys! I am going to add this to my list of fun things to do over spring break. My 5 yr old son has an unworn black t-shirt I ordered from old navy, just sitting in his drawer. I know he would love to paint the stencil himself. Of course, now I need to find something for my 4 yr old daughter, I don't think I will be able to talk her into a skull and crossbones, even if we paint it pink!
Hi, Thanks for sharing your project. I just used the pirate skull and crossbones as an applique to decorate the arm sling I made for my 7 yo boy who broke his arm. He's delighted with his new pirate sling. Happy holidays

Great Idea - I am planning a 4 year old PIRATE party - so this will work wonderfully.
