Sunburst Mirror

The switch from Dark Victorian to Retro Funk has begun!!! I am really happy with how it is all coming together and I can't wait to see it all completed. One of my first projects for the living room was a sunburst mirror. Apparently they are back in style because I have been seeing them all over the place lately!
Here is my version and it only cost $3!!!
I started out by picking up some small dowel rods (1/8" x 12") $.99/pk at JoAnn Fabrics and a 5" mirror at Dollar Tree for $1 (with the candle holders). This project also used some items I already had on hand: hot glue gun, box cutter, 16 gauge wire, acrylic paint, and a foam paint brush.

I started by hot gluing four of the dowel rods together at their original size. Then I took four more rods and used the box cutter to cut them each down to about 9" long. I glued to the first four, alternating long and short.

This will all be covered so there is no need to be neat. I do suggest putting down some cardboard or something else to keep from gluing them to your surface.

Fill the rest in with your remaining dowel rods. Cut them down with a box cutter and arrange in whatever way makes you happy. Cover the entire center with a bunch of hot glue to keep everything in place.

Use a foam brush to cover with a fun shade of acrylic paint. Most of the sunburst mirrors you will see out there are a metallic color but I wanted to add a pop of color so I chose a bright orange.

Once the paint is dry, hot glue the mirror to the center.

Cut about a 3" piece of 16 gauge wire and bend to form a hook to hang it by. Hot glue this to the back.

All finished! I had picked up some little 3/4" inch mirrors at JoAnn's for about 10/$1 to add to some of the ends but I decided that I liked the way it looked without them.
I love the way it turned out! It added a pop of color and funk to a blank wall.
Now I just need to decide what color to paint the walls:

I really like the one on the far right. I just want to find something a shade lighter so that all of the rooms aren't the same exact shade.
I also need to pick up some pretty gerber daisies for my Coca-Cola vases. :)

Wouldn't you know, I made a sunburst mirror this week too. I'm seeing so many DIY ones out there now. Great minds think alike. My only suggestion is to use another glue (like liquid nails) as hot glue hold great until it doesn't. One of these days you may find a bunch of dowels on the floor.
