Fried Green Tomatoes

The other day I fried up some green tomatoes for the first time. Why? Because this is the South and apparently we fry everything down here.

I had heard of Fried Green Tomatoes before thanks to the movie but I had never tried them. As we were gathering a few green tomatoes from my in-law's garden I asked what they taste like. My husband said that they are hard to explain and don't taste like anything else he had ever eaten. The best description my father-in-law could come up with was "tangy".

That was an understatement.

When we got home, I sliced them up, dipped them in egg that had been slightly beaten, coated them in flour mixed with some salt and pepper, and placed them in hot oil to fry. All according to the directions that had been given to me by the guys.

I sat down to have one with my dinner and after taking a bite I told Shelby, "I think I did something wrong." He tried one and said I cooked them just right.

So I tried another bite. Nope. Just as awful as the bite before. Took a third bite to see if I could acquire a taste for them. I never made it to my fourth bite and wasn't able to finish even that one tomato slice.

Shelby enjoyed them and I will make them for him again next summer but I don't believe I will be partaking myself. Blech.

So....show of hands. Green tomatoes: love 'em or hate 'em?

If you love them, do you have any suggestions to make them slightly less disgusting? Slice the tomatoes thinner? Fry them until they are crispier?
