Super Mario Coin Bank

Just a few months ago I shared a tutorial for a Super Mario Savings Bank using a cardboard box and colored paper. That one worked well and was really cheap to make but I decided that I wanted something smaller and I really like the look of perler beads for 8-bit projects so I made another bank.

Most of the beads for this one were reused from a previous project. I decided to use our new Minecraft Coasters in the living room which meant we no longer had a use for our Super Mario Coasters so most of this bank was made by deconstructing the old coaster holder and adding in some new beads where necessary.

To keep the lid on, I made a second layer of beads that was one bead smaller all the way around. You can't see this layer so I made it out of the fluorescent yellow beads that I had no other use for. All of the parts for this bank were joined together using hot glue. Make sure your glue gun is super hot before you use it or the pieces won't stay together.

I also made a coin that goes on top of the bank so it looks like you just bumped the block and earned a coin. The old bank was helpful for saving because I couldn't access the cash for something frivolous but the down side was that I couldn't easily access it when my son's school had a penny drive or when the cash added up to enough that I didn't feel safe having it sitting out and wanted to deposit it in the bank. So I like this coin bank a little better since the lid is removable.

It is also small enough to fit on my nightstand next to my lamp and LEGO Super Mario Power-Up Art.

I still had my Super Mario Coasters left and I didn't want all of them to go to waste so I took some of the basic power ups, removed the felt from the back and glued them into a frame that we had sitting in the basement. Now they add a splash of color to the dresser!
