Messy String Art

The practical parts of my craft room are done which means that it is time to start decorating! I started with this fun "CREATE" sign. I started with a basic retro string letters and added some loose strings here and there because creativity can get messy. :)

Start by painting a scrap piece of thin plywood. This was left over from my diy photography light box and is about 1' x 2'. Print out your word or design and tape in place. For this one I used the DotumChe font in 500px. I had already started the next step before I realized that I didn't put it in bold like I was originally planning on doing. It still turned out alright, the letters just aren't as thick. Oh well.

Hammer some small nails around the outline. I used 18 gauge 5/8" wire brads. Pull the paper away to reveal just the outline.

Gather different colors of embroidery thread and tie one end onto one of the nails in the letter you are working on. Wrap around each of the nails completing the outline. Hold the thread tightly because it unravels easily.

Go back through the letter, doing random criss-cross designs this time. Then go over the outline again. Tightly tie off the end.

Haphazardly tie on some "tails" as my son calls them. Pre-drill some holes near the corners then use screws to mount to the wall.

So cool! I've seen lots of string lettering lately (love it), but your loose strings are such a fresh and charming touch. This project caught my eye immediately at TT&J.

Thanks! It really bothers my son and he tried to "help" me by cutting them off but it makes me happy. :)
